Reign in Purple [Mar. 17th, 2011|06:02 pm]
Spooky Art

There was no real reason behind this piece other than that I had an unpainted piece of wood and needed a three-day break from the commissioned stuff (I used 60 hours of which for this one).

Dropping my standard luminist style for this one, and though it is cartoony and simple, I still went pretty deep into the detail, painting many scales, variegated petals, and whatnot. Oddly enough, I found that it was the large areas of solid colors, and keeping the piece smooth and free of brushstrokes which sapped the most time.

Steampulp Baba Yaga [Feb. 14th, 2011|12:25 pm]

"The Magic Hut"

I've been dying to do a Baba-Yaga themed piece for some time now. I could probably do ten more and still not cover all of her faces or personalities.

This one I took a heavy-mechanical and clunky tentacle whipping approach - with the hut trampling trees and tearing the earth and road below on its rampage into a sleepy town

Red Hand Assemblage [Aug. 1st, 2010|04:49 pm]

Red Hand Assemblage Showing Hand

This artwork is three in one.

The box/dual frame: I labored hard for over a week on the box, which is a very sturdy hand-built, hand-stained, hand-varnished, hand-waxed chunk of quality hardwood (heartwood select pine base and birch sides). It not only serves as a box (if you would want to use it as such a thing), but as a self-contained double frame which requires no wall hanging. It is perfect for a coffee table, end table, mantle, dining table or most any flat surface you would like to display it on... and it is so sturdy in construction that you won't be freaking out if people get near it.

Engraved on Ampersand Art Claybord black at 5x7 inches, my hand was killing me by the end of the night for all the detail I put into this latest set.

Cheshire Cat

A strange and doubly-insane mechanical Cheshire Cat.

When I am away from my paintings and my computer I tend to do these engravings.

These are the most portable and convenient pieces in the works: no paints to spill, no pens to explode in my pockets, and no looking for a place to plug in - All I need to take with me are a scratchboard and a needle or quill.

So, I tend to make these most often when I am on the road or in the air for holidays, conventions, and the like.

This is my latest piece. It is 5x7 inches on archival scratchboard (made of tempered hardboard, white clay, and india ink).

The details are so tiny in this piece that I am able to print it at twice its size and still have it look amazingly detailed.
