"The Rescue" (thumbnail cropped) - A painting commissioned by Capatin Robert of Abney Park. It is roughly 34 x 24 inches, painted on a mahogany panel in acrylic. I added the submarine and tentacles to provide some minor action and drama to the otherwise serene piece.

Persistence of Time: A rework of a former piece. I just finally got a new monitor and realized how much I hated the old. This work is a combination of artwork and clothing design - as I like working with leather.

Another Few Claybord Engravings [Dec. 6th, 2007|05:17 pm]

this is the 'blood' variant of Uxia - a Photoshop colored version of the Engraving.

Uxia from "Dagon" against an ocean backdrop - done in Mucha's design style, Dore's shading style - with lots of hidden and semi-hidden elements - Gigeresque and tiki creatures in the bubbles, skulls and faces in the waves of the sea, a field of eyes as a backdrop for the central figure, and a pretty striped seasnake to round the graphic out and to add some Burton knockoff flair. I wanted the Glyph of Dagon to make the appearance of cat/fox ears and the gate of Dagon to make for wings so I could pretty much cover all cliches in one stroke (mermaid, pin up, lovecraft, giger, tiki, skulls, anamorphs/kitsune, angels/fairies...)

I did this piece for fun, mostly because I wanted to draw a mermaid, but in a different style and theme from the pretty colorful fairy-like ones typically offered on Ebay, and I wanted to do so with a mix of styles from some of my favorite artists.

I have prints of this and the original available on my site here

Little baby Cthulhu I did for fun - decorated with gold leaf. I don't think I am doing prints of this one, but I do have the original up here on ebay.

Happy October [Oct. 5th, 2007|08:44 pm]

[music |The Birthday Massacre - Red Stars]

I love October. It's not my favorite month, but it's close. I love the seasonal change (though in Phx Az it's not much of a change), I love the holiday aroma candles, I love the browns and oranges and yellows...I love how the dead come to life to eat your brain...

Yeah. October is a very nice month.

...

I haven't posted much lately due to the lack of time and lack of personal projects I care to show off and say "look what I made!!". I took my daughter to see The Birthday Massacre a couple weeks ago. Had a brilliant time. They're easily my favorite band right now, unfortunately the crowd turnout sucked monkey butt and I'm afraid that it will affect whether or not they come back. It's not like they're desperate for venues, they're on a world tour right now and a number of their shows around the states have sold out (or so I'm told). But we had fun, regardless. And I'd totally travel to a neighboring state to see them again.

Been severely busy lately with work. Making t-shirt designs, skateboard designs, drawing comic books, lettering comic books, coloring comic books...I'd feel better about being so busy if I were getting much in the way of a financial kick-back from ANY of it, but I'm not. It's a genuine love for what I do that keeps me doing what I do.

A bit of early self promotion: On November 4th I'll be sitting with Jay Fotos at the Phoenix Comic Con studio for the Art Walk thing in Tempe. If you know what I'm talking about, cool...if not I'll find out the rest of the information and let everybody know closer to the event. I'll also be seated at the Phoenix Cactus Comic Con Artist Gallery drawing stuff for people. That will be in January. If you're goin, come on by. If not, you suck.

Today's image: One T-Shirt design, coming soon to a cafepress near you. Happy October, kids.

New board design... [Aug. 6th, 2007|11:00 am]

I think I'm enjoying this new love in my life because it's a new medium for me. Designing on boards gives me new restrictions and new layout challenges. After I get a few more boards done I may open up an online shop or something so I can make these available to the public. I've had far too many interested buyers to ignore.

Here's the newest:

larger images - Five Engravings on ClayboardCollapse )

I am primarily a paints and markers person.

These are some scratchboard pieces I have done over the past year. I typically do these in flight to pass the time, because it is a lot easier than dealing with pens and inks and markers, wondering what will and will not be allowed aboard the plane this time around. I wear a button on every trip, and dismantle it once the plane gets going, uncoiling the copper needle inside - hoping the person next to me does not start screaming 'terrorist' or something. So, the scratch tool I used for some of these was a bit on the primitive side.
